What are AAC methods?

Augmentative and alternative communication methods (AAC) helps understanding.  Speech is always used with AAC methods. These methods can use objects, photos, pictures, symbols, gestures or devices to support the meaning of the utterance.

Symbols can be found in picture banks, for example ScleraWidgit and PCS-pictures

Picture/symbol communication can be used in symbol tables or communication boards. Similar boards with different core vocabulary can be used in schools, day care or social centers or communities.

There has been a growing awareness in recent years of the need to provide augmentative and alternative communication to persons who have complex communication needs. Those persons with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome benefit using of AAC that may include use of manual signs, communication boards and books, high-tech electronic devices and other forms of unaided and aided communication. One popular AAC programme for communication devices is GoTalkNow. You can use five (5) pages for free.

Practicing communication methods is efficient. Only 3 x 15 min/week is enough to develop person’s symbol communication skills.

You can practise with student for example creating symbol tables for health care or create visual timetables, schedules and present pictures about the staff in day care situations. Pinterest is good source to look at ideas how to prepare communication materials.
